Backstory

Ariel’s Grotto is nestled within the lush, ocean-inspired landscape of Fantasyland. The grotto itself is meant to represent a hidden, secret place beneath the sea where Ariel, the adventurous and curious mermaid princess, keeps her treasured human artifacts.

This space is filled with whimsical decorations and curiosities, giving visitors a sense of stepping into Ariel’s private world.

Guests journey through a rocky, cavernous queue that mimics the craggy underwater caves where Ariel might swim. This design element not only enhances the immersive experience but also provides a cool, shaded area that offers relief from the Florida heat and rain.

Special Considerations

Ariel’s Grotto is fully accessible for guests using wheelchairs or Electric Conveyance Vehicles (ECVs). The attraction is designed to ensure that all visitors can enjoy the experience comfortably.

All in the Details

Ariel’s Grotto, located in the Magic Kingdom’s Fantasyland, officially opened on December 6, 2012. This attraction was part of the extensive Fantasyland expansion, which aimed to enhance guest experiences with more immersive environments and character interactions.

Before the current grotto, there was an earlier version of Ariel’s Grotto in the Magic Kingdom. This original attraction featured a water play area and allowed guests to meet Ariel. It closed in April 2010 to make way for the new Fantasyland development.

During the interim period between the closure of the old grotto and the opening of the new one, Ariel continued to meet guests in a different location within the park. She could be found in Adventureland, where she was occasionally joined by Prince Eric, adding a unique element to the character meet-and-greet experience.

The new Ariel’s Grotto provides a more intimate and quiet setting compared to its predecessor. The design of the queue area mimics a craggy cave, offering guests a themed environment while they wait. Additionally, the new grotto is unique because it allows only one or two families to interact with Ariel at a time, enhancing the personal feel of the experience.

Tips

Check wait times: Wait times can range from 20 to 60 minutes. It’s recommended to visit during off-peak hours, such as early morning or later in the evening, to minimize wait times.

Capture the magic: A Disney’s PhotoPass photographer is stationed at Ariel’s Grotto to capture your magical moments with Ariel. Additionally, cast members are happy to use your camera to take photos if you prefer.

Get your autograph book ready: Ariel is delighted to sign autograph books. To make the process smoother, have your book and pen ready before it’s your turn to meet her.

Fun Facts

Ariel’s Grotto is the only place in Walt Disney World, outside of character dining experiences, where guests can meet Ariel in her mermaid form.
