Disney Week in Review: March 6, 2020

We have openings, extended closings, and plenty of hand sanitizers for your health and safety. Let’s get ready ‘cause “nothing can stop us now” as we look back at this week’s headlines.

Something in the Water? Last week, a Jungle Cruise boat sort-of sunk, along with a couple PeopleMover cars colliding. This week, the Haunted Mansion is closed for an indefinite amount of days, and the newly-refurbed Splash Mountain saw significant downtime on Tuesday. About the Grim Grinning Ghosts, there are reports that the OmniMover tracks are damaged. What’s going on?

Coronavirus Concerns: Due to worries about the coronavirus, hand sanitizers have been installed throughout the parks, near restaurants, and at the resorts. CMs are also being instructed to thoroughly clean their workstations. If going to the parks, make sure to practice healthy hygiene habits (AKA wash your hands).

Disney released an official statement:

“We know there is new information this week about Coronavirus in Florida. We have very stringent sanitation procedures in place at Walt Disney World Resort.

We are in close contact with health agencies for information and guidance, and at this time, we are continuing to communicate to our Cast the importance of preventative measures such as frequent handwashing and rigorous cleaning processes.

For guest convenience, we have placed additional hand sanitizers throughout our parks and resorts and will adjust our protocols as the situation warrants.”

The Great Mickey Ride (aka Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway): The first Mickey Mouse-themed attraction opened on Wednesday. Wait times were up to 300 minutes, but by mid-day, those times were cut down to 120. Of course, it wouldn’t be a grand opening without guests getting evacuated off the ride. Fans of the new shorts loved the ride, while old school Great Movie Ride aficionados wondered why this replaced that classic attraction.

Sad News: On Wednesday, the Contemporary Resort was the scene of a suicide. There were reports that a woman jumped from the building. The monorail and all transportation were shut down as police conducted an investigation. For those who need help or feel there’s no solution, make sure to call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 or text HOME to 741741 to reach the Crisis Text Line.

Give It a Whirl: Due to higher crowds in the park, Primeval Whirl will be open for a limited time. These dates include: March 21, 22, 23, 28, 29

Opening Date-ish? The Space 220 Restaurant maybe, sorta has an opening date… April 2020. No other details like the exact date or the menu have been released yet. We will keep you posted with any more news.

That’s all for this week! Come back next Friday for another look at the crazy world of WDW.

Theresa has been a life-long Disney fan since she first visited the Magic Kingdom in 1985 at the age of 3. According to her mother, she squealed with excitement when she saw Winnie the Pooh and Chip n' Dale for the first time. That love for Disney has not waned as she grew up. She continues to be fascinated with the history of EPCOT Center and maintains the radio station, Kungaloosh Radio.
