Disney Week in Review – February 28, 2020

This week at Walt Disney World: The Butcher of Parks and Resorts takes over The Walt Disney Company, it’s getting scarier this August, and Spaceship Earth finally gets a closing date for the remodel. Let’s take a look at all the news around the Walt Disney World property.

More On Your Plate: There’s a new Dining Plan on the block. Beginning February 28, a new Disney Dining Plan “Plus” is available for those with a Disney Resort hotel package. With the plan, guests can redeem two meals per day in a combination of Quick Service, Table Service, or Character Dining. This plan also includes two snacks per day, a refillable mug, and unlimited coffee, tea as soda, or one non-alcoholic beverage. If you are 21 and older, you can enjoy a beer, wine, or cocktail.

Boo to You: It’s the special time of year where we haven’t even started spring, but Disney has decided to release the dates for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party. The dates are as follows:

  • August: 13, 18, 21, 25, 28
  • September: 1, 4, 7, 11, 13, 15, 18, 20, 22, 25, 27, 29
  • October: 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 9, 11, 13, 15, 16, 18, 20, 22, 23, 25, 27, 29, 31
  • November: 1

Like every year, your ticket prices will depend on the date of the party. Adult tickets will run from $85 to $149, with children tickets ranging from $89 to $144. Tickets for the event are on sale right now.

Big Shocker: On Tuesday, Bob Iger stepped down as CEO of The Walt Disney Company, effective immediately. His replacement is none other than company pencil pusher, Bob Chapek. You know all those entertainment cuts in the Parks? Yeah, that’s the work of Chapek. Iger will stay on as Executive Chairman until December 31, 2021 (end of his current contract).

Grand and Miraculous Spaceship: EPCOT adds another refurbishment to the list. The long-awaited ( rumored two-year closing) reimagining of Spaceship Earth will begin on May 26. Disney Parks Blog did give a sneak peek of what we can expect when this classic attraction reopens.

Swimming Instructors Needed: On Thursday, a boat on the Jungle Cruise started to take on water… with guests inside. Thankfully, no one was injured. There is only 3 feet of water, so the only major issues were soggy shoes. But hey, how does a boat sink when it is on a track?

Baseless Rumor of the Week: The Mary Poppins attraction in EPCOT might not be a “ride” that we all expect. Instead, it will be an experience like Enchanted Tales with Belle.

That’s all the news for this wild week at WDW. Make sure to come back next week as we wrap up all the craziness around the World.

Theresa has been a life-long Disney fan since she first visited the Magic Kingdom in 1985 at the age of 3. According to her mother, she squealed with excitement when she saw Winnie the Pooh and Chip n' Dale for the first time. That love for Disney has not waned as she grew up. She continues to be fascinated with the history of EPCOT Center and maintains the radio station, Kungaloosh Radio.
